I like the idea of the luxury tax for professional league clubs as long as the FA did the sensible thing and instead of dishing out the cash amongst professional clubs, invest it properly in grass roots infrastructure such as ground improvements, 4G pitches etc for non league.
I’ll give you a couple of examples where the money could be used….
For northern league clubs, invest in the long term to create sporting hubs for each host town / village. 4G pitches should be standard, modern grounds, possibly a clubhouse for a community hub. Obviously there are grants available now but clubs at this level can’t afford 50%. So the FA should pay 100% and the club repays their 50% in instalments. The annual repayment should be based on their level in the pyramid and be affordable e.g. step 5 could be £15k per season, step 4 £30k, step 3 £45k etc —- you get my point. This allows massive investment in community sporting hubs without the host / owner clubs being exposed to huge financial risk. Get promoted (you’ve benefitted from the new ground) and you pay more. Get relegated and you pay less.
This would also be a huge benefit to clubs like Darlo. For non- league they have a large and largely untapped supporter base. Their future is at risk because a) they can’t get a new ground started because of the complexities of land, finance etc which holds them back and b) paying for a new ground is risky - get relegated and you still need to pay your full mortgage amount.
I think the above and a restructure of the fixtures would be the best long term solution for grass roots football which at the moment is dying under crippling costs from ground grading, old grounds not attractive to new fans and very poor pitch infrastructure.
