Today’s football adventure was at the Memorial Ground in Hartley Wintney (Hampshire) for the Isthmian South Central League match against Guernsey.
Guernsey FC have only existed for about 15 years, being a community club to promote the game on the island.
The ground is a basic one, with two stands of seats, standing behind the goals and on the clubhouse side.
Both teams had many new players, Hartley Wintney fielded a nearly new eleven. And to be blunt it showed, they missed passes, were unsure of who was marking whom etc. But “the Row” scored first, the huge centre forward Charlie Postance scoring from close range, before Guernsey equalised before half time.
As the second half progressed there were quite a few niggly tackles, but the referee handled it well … talking to the players in a friendly way and where necessary warning.
Hartly’s second goal was scored by Adele Dede …a run was timed well to score past the Guernsey keeper. From where I was it looked offside, but the referee was well placed to allow it - the assistant was ten yards behind play and couldn’t have made a decision.
All in all a very enjoyable afternoon ( early 2pm kick off to allow for Guernsey travel so briefly Hartley Wintney were top of the League.)
